At garage near Loudwater, we have a number or modern car diagnostics tools and a range of other state-of-the-art equipment at our disposal, not to mention access to high-quality spare parts. But this was certainly not the case for the first ever car repair workshops and on this page, we briefly look into this history.

A Brief History of Car Diagnostics and Repairs

When the first commercially produced cars became available just before the start of the 20th Century, spare parts were hard to obtain. The early vehicle owner would usually have to undertake car repairs themselves or seek out a bicycle mechanic, blacksmith or someone in a similar trade. Wealthier car owners employed chauffer-mechanics who were knowledgeable in vehicle maintenance – a valuable skill in the early days of motoring.

By the 1920s, the motorised car industry was booming and had become commonplace throughout the UK, likely including Loudwater and the wider Wycombe District. As leading manufactures such as Ford started to manufacture numerous interchangeable car parts, the first car repair workshops began to emerge. These included independent and dealership companies, where motorists could take their vehicle for car repairs and car servicing.

MOT Testing

Compulsory MOT testing was first introduced in Great Britain in 1960 with the introduction of the Motor Vehicles Regulations. The purpose was, and still is, to ensure vehicles are safe, roadworthy and meet certain environmental emissions requirements. If a problem is identified, a vehicle diagnostics test may be needed to investigate the fault further.

At the start, the test was only required for vehicles 10 years or older but was gradually reduced and settled in 1967, to the recognisable 3 years or more. The standard checks carried out during MOT testing have developed greatly over the past few decades, but do not include car diagnostics. One of most recent changes is that car owners in Loudwater and anywhere else in Great Britain will no longer need to arrange an annual MOT test for their vehicle if it is over 40 years old. Car servicing is still recommended.

Vehicle Diagnostics

With the introduction of on-board diagnostics (OBD) in the early 1980s, vehicle diagnostics is now a huge part of the auto repair industry. Take our garage in High Wycombe, just a short distance from the Loudwater area , for example. We use the latest digital car diagnostics tools and software to accurately read the OBD. This helps our team to quickly pinpoint faults and remedy issues with our cost-effective car repairs.
